Teilnehmerin des Monats November 2022: Mara

Wir freuen uns, Mara T. als PPP/ CBYX- Teilnehmerin des Monats November 2022 bekannt zu geben!  Mara, eine Schülerin, lebt zurzeit mit ihrer Gastfamilie in Centerville, Ohio.  

Von Beginn an hat sich Mara kopfüber in ihr Austausch-Abenteuer gestürzt! Sie nahm Kontakt zu den Deutschlehrern an ihrer Highschool auf und hat mittlerweile schon elf Mal mit ihren Mitschülern über die Unterschiede zwischen den USA und Deutschland gesprochen und Fragen zu ihrer Austauscherfahrung beantwortet. 

Ihre vielfältigen Interessen und ihr Wunsch, so viele Menschen wie möglich kennenzulernen, haben sie dazu gebracht, dem “Key Club„, dem “German Club„, dem “Environmental Club„, dem “Coding Club„, dem “Octagon Club„ und dem Schwimmteam beizutreten!  Durch diese Aktivitäten ist sie schnell zu einem aktiven Mitglied sowohl in ihrer Schule als auch in ihrer Gemeinde geworden.  So hat Mara beispielsweise mit dem Umweltclub bei der Trennung von Müll an ihrer Schule geholfen und mit dem Key Club freiwillig kleine Kürbisse für Bewohner in einem nahe gelegenen Altenheim bemalt und Karten für Kinder vor dem Schulwechsel gebastelt.

Im “German Club„ berichtet Mara gern von den Traditionen ihres Landes und durfte sogar an einem Oktoberfest teilnehmen, bei dem die Clubmitglieder deutsche Musik hörten, deutsche Spiele spielten, Brezeln aßen und ihr Wissen über Deutschland auf die Probe stellen konnten.  Sie genießt es, eine Botschafterin Deutschlands zu sein.  Ihre Gastfamilie erklärte, dass sie für die meisten Leute an ihrer High School die erste Person aus einem anderen Land ist, die sie kennenlernen.  Mara ist stolz darauf, dass sie “das erste sein kann, was ihre Mitschüler von einer anderen Kultur erfahren„ und sie damit “neugierig auf den Rest der Welt machen kann„.

Da sie sich für Politik interessiert, hofft Mara, während ihres Aufenthalts in den USA mit lokalen Politikern zusammenzutreffen. Mit Hilfe ihrer Gastmutter hatte sie vor kurzem die Gelegenheit, einen Tag lang die County Commissioner, (vergleichbar mit einer Landrätin) von Montgomery County, Carolyn Rice, zu begleiten.  Mara besuchte mit ihr eine neu eröffnete Tagesstätte für Menschen mit Behinderungen, wo die Politikerin eine Rede hielt.  Anschließend besuchten sie eine Müll-Anlage , wo ein neuer Typ von Müllpresse vorgestellt wurde, der dabei hilft, beim Transport der Abfälle, weniger C02 auszustoßen.  Die letzte Station des Tages war ein Tierheim, wo sie mit Mitarbeitern über die Herausforderungen und mögliche Lösungen für diese Herausforderungen sprachen.  Für Mara, der die Umwelt und die Art und Weise, wie Menschen in Führungspositionen Entscheidungen treffen, am Herzen liegen, war es ein perfekter Tag!  Mara sagt, dass sie Carolyn Rice als Vorbild sieht “weil sie eine sehr gute Führungspersönlichkeit ist, die offen für neue Ideen ist und weil sie glaubt, dass es wichtig ist, andere Standpunkte zu verstehen„.

Obwohl Mara von Centerville noch nichts gehört hatte, bevor sie dort platziert wurde, sagt sie, sie sei begeistert, an einem so wunderbaren Ort zu leben. Die Menschen sind sehr offen und behandeln sie sehr gut. Besonders gut versteht sie sich mit ihrer Gastmutter und erzählt, dass sie “über fast alles reden können„.  Von dem Moment an, als sie bei ihrer Familie ankam, hatte sie das Gefühl, zu Hause zu sein und halt sich als Teil der Familie gefühlt.

Mara hat auch einen positiven Einfluss auf ihre Gastfamilie.  Ihre Gastmutter erklärte stolz: “Mara ist für die ganze Familie so inspirierend!  Es ist beeindruckend zu sehen, wie eine junge Frau vom anderen Ende der Welt in die USA kommt und eine so wunderbare Einstellung hat und sich so sehr in unserer Gesellschaft engagiert.„

We are pleased to announce Mara Treder as the November 2022 CBYX German Participant of the Month! Mara, a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) high school participant placed by ASSE, is hosted by the Sparks family in Centerville, Ohio.

Mara is diving into her U.S. experience head first during these first few months. Reaching out to the German teachers at her school, she has already presented 11 times to her classmates – talking about the differences she is noticing between the U.S. and Germany and answering questions about her exchange experience. Her diverse interests and her desire to meet as many people as possible led her to join the Key Club, German Club, Environmental Club, Coding Club, Powder Puff Club, and swimming team! Through these activities, she is becoming an active member of both her school and local community. For example, Mara discussed recycling at her school with the Environmental Club and volunteered to paint small pumpkins for children in a nearby hospital with the Key Club.

Of course, Mara gets to share her country’s traditions in the German Club, and she organized an October Fest where club members listened to German Music, played German games, ate pretzels, and learned about German traditions. She enjoys being an ambassador of Germany. Her host family explained that, for most people in her high school, she is the first foreigner they have met. She said that she felt proud that she “can be the first thing they experience of a different culture.” 

Given her interest in politics, Mara hopes to meet with local politicians while in the U.S. With the help of her host mom, she recently had the opportunity to shadow Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice for a day to experience first-hand the important work of a county commissioner. Mara went to a newly opened daycare for people with disabilities where the Commissioner gave a speech. They then went to a trash compactor showcase where a new type of compacter was presented that emits less carbon dioxide in the environment. The last stop of the day was an animal shelter where they spoke with workers about the challenges they have and possible solutions to those challenges. For Mara, who is
concerned about the environment and how people in leadership positions make decisions, it was a perfect day. Mara says she views Commissioner Rice as a role model because “she is a very good leader who is open to new ideas” and “she believes that it’s important to understand other points of view.”

Though Mara hadn’t heard of Centerville before being placed there, she says she is thrilled to be living in such a wonderful place. She feels that living in a smaller city lets her establish close relationships with members of her host community. She is especially close with her host mom and shares that they “can talk about almost anything.„ From the moment she arrived at the Spark family’s home, she felt that “this family is [her] family, and this house is

[her] house.“ Mara is also having a positive impact on her host family. Her host mother proudly explained that ”Mara is so inspiring to the whole family! It is impressive to see a young lady from across the world come to the USA and have such a wonderful attitude and be so involved in our local community.“
