Words of welcome by the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Visitors,

I would like to welcome you to the digital photo exhibition „Kyiv is the Unbreakable Heart of Europe“ on the website of the German Bundestag.

In response to an initiative by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, and the Chairman of the German-Ukrainian Parliamentary Friendship Group, Robin Wagener, the Presidium of the German Bundestag has decided to present in digital form this photo exhibition produced by the city of Kyiv. This complements the exhibition shown in May 2022 at the Bundestag entitled „Ukraine: the Price of Freedom“, information on which remains available on our website.

I visited Ukraine myself in May and saw with my own eyes the unimaginable suffering and terrible destruction inflicted by the Russian war of aggression in Kyiv and across the whole country – and which is still ongoing. At the same time I was, and remain, deeply impressed by the will of people in Ukraine to live in freedom, as well as their confidence that they will win the battle for a life of self-determination.

The 28 photos which you can see here reflect these impressions. I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the images and allow them to sink in. They show how important it is for us to demonstrate solidarity and determination in supporting Ukraine in its battle for democracy and freedom– a battle which is also being waged on behalf of our shared European values.
